Plan B

With the Chicago decision less than two weeks away, now would be a good time to prepare myself for the worst. What if no Chicago? I see two options

(1) Put in one more year of face-time at my current job & re-apply next year to a wider gamut of schools.

(2) Look for a new job; more in-line with my post-MBA career interest. Analyst level position dealing with financial modeling/risk management/quantitative analysis n such. In this case, re-apply after at least two yrs in new job.

Option (1) is status-quo. Need not move my ass one bit. Just continue the same routine.

Pluses
* Assured great recommendation from boss. Yeah, my boss loves me and is totally with me on this MBA game ;) Also, if I should decide to give INSEAD a try, my boss can write my recommendation in french :)

* The atypical industry (from bschool perspective) that I am in. Bschools dig applicants with non-traditional work experience (I think so, yes?) and I can play up my current experience from this angle.

* Possibility of a promotion later this year.

Minuses
* Total irrelevance to post-MBA goal.

* Lack of cranial indulgence. :(

I have more but I don't want to get fired just as yet :P

Option (2) is more interesting and is one of the reasons I applied only to a few schools. (The other reason, of course, is that I'm plain lazy. But I guess you already know that from the frequency of my blog update) If things don't work out this time around, I can afford to wait longer than to comprise on quality of the school I will attend. Age is on my side.

This option, however, is more difficult to execute. The kind of companies I'm interested in are very elitist and far more risk-averse in their candidates selection than bschools are. Not sure how successful I'll be.

Both options are good ones depending on your situation. One comment on option one, if I were you, I would apply to completely different schools next year.

The reason is that I found it hard to justify any tremendous improvement after just the short 8 months. But if you apply to completely different schools, the new adcom won't know, right? :-)

Chicago might just accepts you, so don't worry too much yet.. Good luck!

i agree with AynRand. It is good that you have thought about Plan B(I am scared even to look at that territory)...hopefully, you wont need to execute any of this...

aynrand2008,

Yes, thanks for the advice. I totally agree with your comment. I've realised that I'll be applying to a new set of schools if I re-apply immediately next year.

This is another reason I didn't randomly shoot too many applications this year ;)

Plan A, Plan B, Plan C ..appadi ippadinu na kooda nariya plan panni irukken da.. but then you always have this thing called the "Theory of the Unexpected".

Btwn.. I guess you have done all you could do da. So better wait for them to decide.

See ya soon in Chicago.

I want to pick flaws in your option 1 for the heck of it. First, you assumed that your boss will give you a good reco. Is it possible that he isn't doing so in reality -- one reason why you are going through this contemplative routine? Second, you have already expressed your intent to leave a place, and now you want to prolong your stay. It isn't ideal and you will lose interest in no time. Besides, you'll be on the chopping block if Mt.Vindhya topples over. Finally, why do something that you never wanted to do in the first place? Move on!

Unsolicited advice I know. You can expect this on the web. :)

anon,

Thanks for your advice. Agree whole-heartedly with you that option 1 is far from ideal. Just that I'm not sure yet about executing option 2 successfully.

BTW, do I know you?
